FAQ
A Working Holiday is a visa program that lets young Canadians (usually 18–35) live, travel, and work abroad for up to a year. Instead of just visiting as a tourist, you’ll have the legal right to take paid jobs while you explore a new country.
Our programs are open to Canadian citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 (some destinations have a maximum age of 30). You’ll need a valid Canadian passport for the duration of your stay abroad. Additional eligibility criteria may vary depending on the country.
It depends on the destination, but the most common options include:
– Teaching English (with contracts up to 12 months, housing often included)
– Hospitality & Tourism (hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafés)
– Internships & Seasonal Work (cultural exchange, summer camps, ski resorts)
Some programs offer comprehensive benefits such as free housing, flight reimbursement, or travel allowances.
Not always! In most cases, you don’t need a job lined up before you leave Canada. With a Working Holiday visa, you can arrive in your host country, look for work on the ground, and start when you’re ready. That said, some of our placements (teaching, internships, hospitality packages) guarantee a job before you travel.
Most Working Holiday visas are valid for 12 months. Some countries allow extensions or the chance to apply for a different visa type if you’d like to stay longer.
As a government-recognized organization under International Experience Canada (IEC), we help you every step of the way:
– Guidance on the visa application process
– Screening and preparation calls before you apply
– Placement in teaching, hospitality, or internship programs
– In-country support through our partners abroad
– Resources to help you find jobs and housing if you’re traveling independently
Visa fees, flights, and living expenses are your responsibility, but program costs vary depending on the destination. Some teaching and hospitality programs come with no placement fee or include extras such as free housing, travel allowance, or airport pickup. We’ll walk you through your options so you know exactly what to expect.
Not necessarily! Many placements only require English (especially teaching roles). However, speaking French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, or another language is a big advantage and may open up more opportunities.
Languages Canada supports Canadians in all International Experience Canada destinations across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. If you’re looking to obtain a Working Holiday visa for any of the participating countries, we are here to help!
If you’re looking for programs with job placements, those include:
– France (teaching & hospitality)
– South Korea (teaching)
– Taiwan (teaching)
– Australia & New Zealand (hospitality & seasonal work)
– Japan, Germany, Ireland, Portugal (working holiday programs & internships)
…and more, as program offers expand.
Yes. We work only with trusted, government-recognized partners abroad, and vetted travel insurance providers. You’ll also have access to on-the-ground support once you arrive. Of course, traveling abroad requires flexibility and independence, but we’re here to make sure you’re prepared and supported throughout the journey.
Yes! As long as you both meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for the same destination and even request to be placed in the same city or region (when possible).
When you apply on your own, you’re responsible for navigating visa applications, finding a job, arranging housing, and handling challenges on your own. With Languages Canada, you’ll benefit from:
– Expert guidance on eligibility and paperwork
– Access to pre-arranged job placements
– Added benefits like free housing or travel stipends (depending on the program)
– Support in Canada and abroad if challenges come up
